Bronze Figure of a Man wearing a Chlamyd

Bronze Figure of a Man wearing a Chlamyd

The statuette is made of solid bronze. It depicts a standing male figure, clad in a short cloak (which the Greeks called a chlamys) fastened over the right shoulder with a circular fibula. The man extends his right arm towards the viewer, whilst his left arm is entirely concealed beneath the cloak. In his visible hand, clenched into a fist, he held an attribute. His feet are clad in high ankle boots, fastened with incised laces. His hair, cut short, covers his head like a cap; a few strands are indicated by regular engravings. A button in the centre of the skull probably served to secure a headdress.

Product Description

The statuette is made of solid bronze. It depicts a standing male figure, clad in a short cloak (which the Greeks called a chlamys) fastened over the right shoulder with a circular fibula. The man extends his right arm towards the viewer, whilst his left arm is entirely concealed beneath the cloak. In his visible hand, clenched into a fist, he held an attribute. His feet are clad in high ankle boots, fastened with incised laces. His hair, cut short, covers his head like a cap; a few strands are indicated by regular engravings. A button in the centre of the skull probably served to secure a headdress.

The cloak was certainly woven from thick wool, as evidenced by its texture—indicated by small incised dots—and, above all, by the way it falls stiffly and straight, as if its weight prevented the formation of the cascading folds typical of linen fabrics.

In Greek iconography, this cloak was characteristic of travellers: the statuette could therefore be a votive offering made by a man accustomed to travelling, such as a merchant. However, its iconography most closely resembles that of two famous travellers of antiquity: the god Hermes (who was the divine messenger and, at the same time, the god of merchants and trade) and Odysseus, the hero and protagonist of the Odyssey. Here, the figure’s young age and the presence of ankle boots suggest Hermes: it is therefore likely that his right hand held either Hermes’ long satchel (which contained money for trade) or the caduceus (his staff), and that on his head he wore the petasos (the large hat worn by this god).

Statuette of two seated young bulls

Statuette of two seated young bulls

This small, beautiful object is composed of two elements: a parallelepiped that serves as a base for two statuettes of young bulls, whose bodies are merged together and placed head to toe. The animals are seated on the floor, their legs folded under their bodies. In spite of the stylization of the figurines, partly related to their miniature size, the artist skillfully rendered the proportions, the position and anatomy of the bulls. The delicate expression of their muzzle and their somewhat thick appearance certainly tend to imitate the naivety and clumsiness of a young animal.

Greek terracotta figure showing the myth of Europe

Greek terracotta figure showing the myth of Europe

The group comprises two figures: with natural grace, a young woman rides astride a bull that is galloping rapidly towards the viewer’s right. Indeed, the young woman is Europa (the mythological figure after whom our continent is named), who was one of the three daughters of the King of Tyre (a major Phoenician coastal city). She was abducted by Zeus on the beach where she was playing with her sisters: the god appeared to her in the form of a magnificent white bull and carried her, riding the waves of the sea, all the way to Crete.

Greek Terracotta Statuette of a Standing Actor

The statuette depicts a standing man, with a mask, which characterizes him as an actor. He is dressed in a large cloak. As it is usually the case at that time for terracotta examples, our figurine was molded in two parts, the front and the back.
