Product Description

Made of faience and probably molded, this amulet represents a frog in stylized forms. The arched body has no indication of forelegs, while the hind legs are folded in a W-shape along the body, as if the animal was ready to spring. A long vertical incision on its back reproduces the spine. The reverse side is flat and without any detail. The suspension ring is pierced horizontally, between the eyes of the amphibian.

Frogs were widely present in the marshlands of Mesopotamia and on the banks of the Nile, which explains their popularity in Near Eastern and Egyptian iconography, from the Neolithic period and all throughout ancient times. Carved or modeled from various materials (stone, faience, sometimes ivory or metal, etc.), frog-shaped figurines were most often used as amulets: their symbolism was certainly linked to the theme of water, a vital element in a desert environment such as Mesopotamia, but also to that of the perpetual renewal of life, because of their high fertility, of the dramatic changes they go through during the stages of their life cycles (egg, tadpole, frog) and of their ability to adapt to both aquatic and terrestrial environment.

    Ancient Attic Greek Black-Figure Lekythos

    Ancient Attic Greek Black-Figure Lekythos

This lekythos is a tall vessel with a single handle attached to the broad shoulder terminating in a narrow neck and a rather large, semi-spherical mouth covered in black. The lower part of the body and a circular foot are also painted in black. The neck received a delicate decoration of tendrils of ivy with typical heard-shape leaves and stylized berries; it is separated from the shoulder by a band of tongues. The shoulder has a chain of seven, prominently painted palmettes.

Statuette of two seated young bulls

Statuette of two seated young bulls

This small, beautiful object is composed of two elements: a parallelepiped that serves as a base for two statuettes of young bulls, whose bodies are merged together and placed head to toe. The animals are seated on the floor, their legs folded under their bodies. In spite of the stylization of the figurines, partly related to their miniature size, the artist skillfully rendered the proportions, the position and anatomy of the bulls. The delicate expression of their muzzle and their somewhat thick appearance certainly tend to imitate the naivety and clumsiness of a young animal.

Near Eastern Bowl with the Figurine of a Bull

The bowl is perfectly turned. The ceramic is beige, but the surface is entirely covered with colored paint. The element that makes this piece a very special, perhaps unique object, is certainly the statuette of the quadruped.
