Product Description

The old woman, entirely draped in a large cloak surmounting her chiton, is seated on a stool; her face is covered with a grotesque mask (that recalls the head of a monkey), whose melancholic gaze is directed toward the baby she holds in her bare arms. The child, whose head only and part of the swaddled body are visible, has a wide, round face that suggests an adult male rather than a baby; he wears a triangular pilos on his head. The statuette was molded, but is not hollowed; it was then perfectly modeled in every detail.

During the late 5th and following century, different types of terracotta examples appeared in various regions of Greece, representing theatrical characters such as the seated or the standing slave, the old man or woman, the nurse with her baby, Heracles, the young veiled woman, etc. These characters were standardized and belonged to different comedies of the ancient repertoire: the large group of Attic statuettes, now housed in New York, that constitutes one of the most important and rare direct connections with the Middle Comedy, certainly belongs to this series.

Our example, whose type is attested by the few parallels coming from mainland Greece (Attica, Corinth, Boeotia), can probably be seen as the grotesque or satirical version of the theatrical character of the old seated nurse holding or breastfeeding her swaddled baby, that appeared circa the middle of the 4th century. Another variant can also mentioned, with the figurines representing the old woman standing upright on a small square base, and the child wearing, like here, a sort of conical hat.

    Hunchback Statuette (?)

Hand-modelled, the sculpture depicts a figure of indeterminate gender, characterised above all by the obvious deformation of its spine: its back forms a large hump, emphasised by the spine, which is slightly raised, and by the rendering of the ribs, painted dark brown. This deformity causes the figure’s torso to lean abnormally forwards and to the left.

Statuette of two seated young bulls

This small, beautiful object is composed of two elements: a parallelepiped that serves as a base for two statuettes of young bulls, whose bodies are merged together and placed head to toe. The animals are seated on the floor, their legs folded under their bodies. In spite of the stylization of the figurines, partly related to their miniature size, the artist skillfully rendered the proportions, the position and anatomy of the bulls. The delicate expression of their muzzle and their somewhat thick appearance certainly tend to imitate the naivety and clumsiness of a young animal.

Bronze Figure of a Man wearing a Chlamyd

The statuette is made of solid bronze. It depicts a standing male figure, clad in a short cloak (which the Greeks called a chlamys) fastened over the right shoulder with a circular fibula. The man extends his right arm towards the viewer, whilst his left arm is entirely concealed beneath the cloak. In his visible hand, clenched into a fist, he held an attribute. His feet are clad in high ankle boots, fastened with incised laces. His hair, cut short, covers his head like a cap; a few strands are indicated by regular engravings. A button in the centre of the skull probably served to secure a headdress.
