Product Description

This cut-glass bottle features a three-dimensional geometric design composed of triangular facets oriented in various directions. Its size is average for this class of small perfume vases. The transparent glass occasionally reveals golden reflections.
The lower section, shaped like a parallelepiped, rests on an apparently flat base: each face is furrowed by deep lines that form geometric patterns, notably including opposing triangles. The neck, with a smooth surface, is hexagonal.

The type of container to which it belongs is widely found throughout the contemporary Muslim world: its name (“molar flask” in English) derives from the shape of the four small, pointed feet—a feature found on many such bottles—which resembles that of a molar.

Despite their attractive and varied appearance, they served a specific commercial purpose, as they were used to transport cosmetics—presumably liquids, given their tall, narrow necks. Although often attributed to Egyptian workshops (in the city of Fustat, for example), it is more likely that the “molar flasks” were produced in several centers, as suggested by the differences in the carved motifs, shape, type of feet, and color of the glass used: in addition to Egypt, workshops located in Iran are also considered likely sources.

    Silver Phiale with Repousse Decoration

    Silver Phiale with Repousse Decoration

A medium-sized, perfectly circular phiale, with a low wall. The body is hollow with a very flared rim; it was hammered from a single, thin sheet of silver. The decoration was entirely carried out in repoussé work, chased from inside and/or outside: it is composed of a central medallion (the omphalos) surrounded by a stem of half-moons alternately surmounted by five lotus flowers and five ovolo patterns.

    Small Mycenaean Pear-Shaped Jar

    Small Mycenaean Pear-Shaped Jar

Skillfully wheel-made vessel provided with three handles that were modeled separately and applied to the shoulder before the firing process.

This vessel with a sinuous profile and a circular, narrow base is very characteristic of Mycenaean culture: it is the reduced version of the large jars that can often be found in tombs and that would have served for the storage of the products used during funerary rituals.

    Sumerian Circular Stone Bowl

    Near Eastern-Sumerian Circular Stone Bowl

A conical bowl, with a perfectly flat circular bottom that provides a good balance to the vessel. Flat and angular lip. The mottled stone, covered with small darker inclusions, gives the surface a unique and original decoration. The vessel has an accurate, perfectly regular shape; it would have been shaped using a potter’s wheel, and hollowed out by drilling.
