Product Description

This small jar, with a decorative ridge in relief that extends the neck and modifies its proportions,  is more elaborate in shape than most other contemporary stone vessels. The perfectly globular body stands on its own despite the absence of base. The lip is flat.

The very regular shape of the bowl indicates that it was carved and hollowed using a rotating technique, probably employing some sort of lathe; a tool similar to a drill served to hollow out the interior, hence the circular traces that appear on the inner surface. The vessel was finally smoothed and polished with a hard stone or with sand.

In the Neolithic period already, stone vessels had a key role in the Near Eastern economies, since they can be found almost everywhere (from Egypt to the Mesopotamian, Iranian or Bactrian worlds), in many shapes, for varied uses, in various dimensions and stones. Stone vases were considered luxury goods and were often found in the tombs of high-ranking individuals and in the treasures of sanctuaries.

    Large Chalice with Geometrical Decoration

This vessel, the size of which makes it one of the largest examples currently known, attracts the eye of the modern viewer with its formal and decorative simplicity. It belongs to a group of well-attested ceramics in the so-called Chalcolithic period (the period that precedes the widespread use of metals, particularly copper and, later, bronze), on the sites of modern-day northern Iran.

    Roman Small Glass Cup (Patella)

This small cup, which belonged to a famous collection of the 19th century, was mold-blown in a transparent glass with an originally bluish tinge.

Used as tableware, these small cups served as drinking vessels but would have also been intended to contain various substances: sauces, spices, other condiments, etc. Produced mainly between the early Flavian period and the early 2nd century A.D., they exist in different versions that vary in the color, in the type of glass, or in details of the shape (shape of the lip, more or less rounded body, etc.).

Perfume Flask in the Shape of a Date
